NDCs in the Asia Pacific Region as the Main Driver of Decarbonisation
The Asia-Pacific region accounts for more than half of global energy consumption, and energy demand continue to rise with rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. The current round of NDCs offers an opportunity to countries in Asia-Pacific region to raise their climate ambitions in new or updated NDCs, whilst accelerating the pathway towards energy transition.
The energy transition, however, cannot be considered in isolation of the socio-economic system. When complemented by supportive policies, energy transition can bring wider benefits in sustainable development goals. In a just and fair energy transition pathway, renewable energy is of paramount importance not only to achieve SDG 7 on universal energy access, but also to achieve numerous other SDGs.
In the framework of the Asia Pacific Climate week, IRENA has organised an event on Nationally Determined Contributions in the Asia Pacific Region as the main driver of decarbonisation. The event discussed how NDCs drive the energy transition and outline emerging technology and innovation strategies for implementing mitigation and adaptation measures in the Asia Pacific Region.
Representatives from governments and international organisations provided insights into the work done to achieve the proposed climate action goals and showcase real-world solutions to decarbonise energy systems with renewable energy. It also presented how the benefits of climate action can enhance an inclusive energy transition with multiple climate resilient agendas to contribute to sustainable development.
