The 11th session of the IRENA Assembly took place in a virtual setting from 18 to 21 January 2021, with related stakeholder meetings held virtually on 13 and 14 January 2021. The sessions was live-streamed on the IRENA Assembly Live webpage.
The event brought together Heads of State/Government, Ministers and energy decision-makers among its Membership and States-in-accession, as well as multilateral organisations, global stakeholders and private actors to reassess long-standing assumptions, perceived barriers and default decisions, and discuss the energy transition as an investment in our collective future.
A High-level Panel on Energy Transition for Sustainable Post-COVID Recovery featured high-level participants including Heads of State, Ministers, heads of international and regional organisations and private actors, who shared their views on the role of the energy transition driven by renewables as a response to the pandemic and draw out strategies to simultaneously advance multiple economic, social and climate priorities.
Four Ministerial Plenary sessions took place, engaging Ministers and High-level participants on specific topics such as National Energy Planning, Finance for Renewables, Renewables and Pathway to Carbon Neutrality and Energising Healthcare.
A number of Stakeholder Engagement events was organized at the margins of the 11th IRENA Assembly that brought specific perspectives on the energy transition from parliamentarians, youth and the private sector. The main objectives included raising awareness of the importance of intensifying global efforts to accelerate the pace of the energy transition in a post-COVID recovery and exploring short- and long-term actions that can mobilise investments in the renewable energy sector.
The Assembly also considered the conclusions of the Agency’s Council meetings and provides guidance on specific administrative and institutional matters.

The goal of the High-level Dialogue on Energy is to raise ambition and accelerate action towards the achievement of the SDG7 and the Paris Agreement on climate change, around five Themes: i) energy access; ii) energy transitions; iii) energy action to advance other SDGs; iv) capacity building and data; and v) finance and investment. Main outcomes will include a forward-looking summary presenting a global plan of action to achieve SDG 7 by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050, and a series of “Energy Compacts” that present multi-stakeholder partnerships and voluntary commitments with tracking frameworks, supported by UN-Energy.
In order to draw on a broad range of expertise and perspectives during the preparations for the Dialogue, a multi-stakeholder Technical Working Group will be established under each Theme to advance in-depth discussions. Each Technical Working Group will produce a thematic report containing substantive recommendations towards an action oriented SDG7 implementation roadmap to 2030 in support of other SDGs and carbon neutrality by 2050. The Technical Working Groups will also help mobilize Energy Compacts to scale up action.
This side-event will present the overview of the High-level Dialogue on Energy 2021, and highlight the work ahead, with a focus on the planned activities of the Technical Working Groups.

As the world acknowledges the role that renewables play in economic recovery as well as delivering continued and sustainable development in light of the pandemic and other threats alike, the
resilience of renewable energy and their successful deployment cannot be overemphasized.
Guided by the theme “Promoting an Inclusive and Just Energy Transition”, the 2021 IRENA Youth Forum will provide an opportunity for participants to engage with each other in discussing renewable energy in the context of equity and equality. It will also serve to strengthen the existing network of young energy leaders with the latest insights from the renewable sector, as well as to connect young people with global thought leaders, government representatives, and IRENA experts in identifying the space that exists for youth to contribute to the promotion of an inclusive and just global energy transition.
With the exchange of views centred around the theme ‘Promoting an Inclusive and Just Energy Transition’, this edition of the IRENA Youth Forum will also provide platforms for three thematic working groups for youths to provide their perspectives on achieving a just and inclusive energy transition on the following subtopics: (i) the role of renewables in addressing key social challenges, including in humanitarian and health sectors; (ii) creating opportunities for youth in the energy transition by addressing challenges related to gender equality, job creation, education; and (iii) promoting youth voices and work, such as community engagement, research and advocacy on renewable energy.
