Whilst representing a third of global energy demand, the transport sector has the lowest level of renewable energy use today. Biofuels can offer readily available solutions for decarbonizing transport as an alternative to fossil fuels and as a complement to the enhanced role of electric mobility. IRENA’s climate-friendly scenario indicates that a five-fold increase of biofuels would be needed by 2050, however, many barriers are holding back their scale-up of biofuels deployment.
