Launch of the Mali RRA report

In 2011, IRENA developed the Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA), a country-specific assessment tool that constitutes the backbone of IRENA’s interventions at national level. The RRA offers a country-led multi-stakeholder process that provides a holistic assessment of the conditions for renewable energy deployment and short to medium term action recommendations to improve the readiness and overcome the key barriers.

In reaction to a request formally expressed by the Minister of Energy and Water of the Republic of Mali in 2016, IRENA has embarked on an RRA exercise with the country. The process was kicked off in April 2017, where the Core RRA team was introduced to the overall RRA process and filled up the RRA templates, which informed the orientation of the assessment. Additionally, bilateral meetings/interviews with some stakeholders including key national institutions as well as development partners were organised to get their perspective on renewable energy deployment in the country. The outcome of these interviews complemented the work of Core RRA team and guided the discussions during subsequent validation meeting, which was held in September 2017. The validation meeting also helped to validate the recommendations of the RRA.

The purpose of this meeting was to present the report that emanated from the RRA process and to discuss ways forward for the implementation of its recommendations. The audience composed of representatives from the Government of Mali through its various Ministries and Agencies, Development Partners, the private sector and research institutions.
