IRENA-TWI Global Solar Energy Standardisation Initiative

In June 2016, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) together with Terrawatt Initiative (TWI) launched the ‘Global Solar Energy Standardisation Initiative’ which aims at standardising contracts to streamline and scale up the global development and financing of solar projects, to contribute to meeting the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. The Initiative will standardise several key documentations required in solar projects, including PPA, O&M Agreements, Supply Agreements, Fit & Commissioning Agreements, Finance Facility Agreement, Project Development and Implementation Guidelines.

With the goal of finalising a package of project and finance documentation for early 2018, working groups consisting of law firms, financial institutions and other core industry stakeholders have come together to discuss, collaborate and innovatively prepare standardised contracts. Such work has been carried out in close consultation with members through various rounds of workshops.

This event aimed to introduce the Initiative’s work to a wide range of renewable energy stakeholders with a focus on the following three topics:

  • Potential benefit of standardised contracts for solar PV investments
  • Innovation in the approach – how standardised contracts can achieve the benefits
  • Ways to ensure high rate of utilisation and uptake of the standardised contract package

This event was open to all registered participants at the IRENA Pavilion. Interested attendees were invited to join the Initiative and to further discuss opportunities for contribution.
