Bonn Lecture Series: Innovation Driving the Energy Sector Transformation

Renewables have been identified by countries as the foundation for a low-carbon energy system by 2050. This will put the world on track towards achieving a zero-carbon energy system in the period from 2060 to 2080, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. However, the current business as usual scenario is not in line with such a desired transformative pathway. Scaling up the deployment of renewable energy is linked to increasing the competitiveness of existing and emerging renewable energy technologies, and to their effective integration into a dynamic global energy system.

This lecture elaborated the role of innovation, across the complete technology lifecycle, in the transformation of the energy sector. It also provided concrete examples of exciting innovations that may become game changers in our efforts to achieve the Paris Agreement climate objectives.

All events in the Bonn Lecture Series took place from 18:00 to 20:00 in Lecture Hall IX of the University of Bonn's Main Building.
