Singapore International Energy Week Roundtable: Renewable Energy Outlook for ASEAN – A REmap
The International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) REmap programme assesses the deployment potential, costs and benefits of renewable technologies at a sector level beyond national targets and plans of countries. In this context, IRENA and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) conducted a joint study Renewable Energy Roadmap Outlook for ASEAN – a REmap analysis by applying IRENA’s REmap analytical methodology and tools at a country and regional level.
ASEAN set a region-wide renewable energy target at 23% of the total primary energy supply by 2025, representing a significant increase from the 2015 level of around 10%. The study focuses on closing the gap between the region’s renewable energy developments detailed in a baseline case and the 23% target, by showing where additional potential of renewable deployment can be achieved by 2025.
The IRENA Roundtable provided a platform to understand which sectors and technologies offer the potential to close this gap. It focused on accelerating renewable energy uptake through regional cooperation and integration of energy markets, and discussed the challenges and solutions in realizing the region’s renewable energy targets.
