Renewable Readiness Assessment for Tanzania

In cooperation with Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals, IRENA is helping to conduct a Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) for the country. Existing conditions for renewable energy development and deployment have been documented in a background paper, and key national stakeholders took part in a validation workshop on 9-10 March to discuss those initial findings.

The assessment process also aims to identify short- to medium-term measures to improve these conditions.

The workshop was the country’s first gathering solely focused on renewable energy. Discussions covered resource assessments and planning; policy and regulatory frameworks; private sector engagement; and human capacities and skills in the sector.

Participants came from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (national utility TANESCO), the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), the Tanzania Traditional Energy Development Organisation (TaTEDO) and the Rural Energy Agency (REA), as well as academia, industry and civil society representatives.

IRENA’s forthcoming RRA report for Tanzania should reflect the recommendations from these national stakeholders.
