IRENA’s Interactive Web Tool on International Standards and Patents for Renewable Energy
This side-event held on 5 June 2015 during the Climate Change Conference in Bonn, addressed the relevance of international standards and patents as useful policy making instruments to foster innovation and dissemination of low-carbon technologies for energy supply. The event counted with the participation of experts in this field from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Patent Office (EPO). The session was moderated by the Chair of the Technology Executive Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The event also featured a preview of IRENA’s interactive web-application on International Standards and Patents in Renewable Energy – INSPIRE. This innovative tool:
- Provides an entry point for information on renewable energy technology (RET) patents and standards for anyone interested in renewables, without requiring expertise in standards or patents;
- Relates this information to practical applications, also enabling meta-analysis concerning renewable energy technology trends;
- Explains patents and standards for RET deployment and how to use them;
- Facilitates discussion on the subject between patents and standards experts, renewable energy professionals, investors, policy makers and others
