Workshop on Financing for Renewable Energy in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
This two-day event was the third Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Lighthouse event in the preparation process for COP21 in December 2015. Representatives from 21 countries and 5 organizations discussed how to take forward the actions agreed in Martinique as part of the Martinique Action Plan (MAP), focusing on opportunities and challenges for financing renewable energy in SIDS.
The following recommendations were made to aid in scaling up renewable energy investments in SIDS:
1) Continue to build and strengthen capacity and access to funding at regional and national level;
2) Facilitate the development and financing of renewable energy projects;
3) Identify and utilize appropriate business models, financial instruments and funding sources for small-scale renewable energy systems in the SIDS context.
Results of this workshop were taken forward at COP 21 in Paris and beyond. The next Lighthouses meeting was held at the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC). This event was organized by IRENA and Ministry of the Environment Japan (MOEJ) and supported by The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Institute for Global Environment Strategies (IGES).
