REmap country analysis preview

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presented its renewable energy roadmaps for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), China and the United States. IRENA’s global renewable energy roadmap, REmap 2030, shows that doubling the share of renewables in the global energy mix by 2030 is possible – and that every country has a role to play in realising this transition.

REmap findings for the UAE, prepared in cooperation with the Masdar Institute and the Directorate of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), confirm that the country’s renewable energy share can reach nearly 9% by 2030 through the implementation of a range of renewable energy technologies, deployed mainly in the power sector but also in buildings and industry. With current renewable energy use barely above 0%, the increase would require a significant acceleration in renewable energy deployment, with immediate policy action to start the energy transformation.

The presentation took place during the eighth meeting of the IRENA Council, one of the governing bodies of the intergovernmental organization. Draft results for the UAE were earlier presented to a group of experts during IRENA’s seventh Council meeting, in June 2014. Based on the feedback received, the results were incorporated into the REmap UAE country report, one of the first in a series of forthcoming REmap country reports.
