Training National Development Banks and Financing Institutions in the Pacific Islands, May-August 20

Financing is often a crucial element of renewable energy deployment and is often more difficult for small island nations who do not have sufficient economies of scale to attract large investments. There is a general recognition in all countries that both public and private sector need to attract financing in all forms (grants, loans and other investments) and there needs to be a sharpening of skills to develop energy loan programmes. IRENA partnered with two regional institutions – Secretariat of the Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and IUCN Oceania to deliver three training courses in the Marshall Islands (19-23 May 2014), Tonga (7-11 July 2014) and Tuvalu (5-8 August 2014). The three trainings were attended by a total of 54 participants representing commercial and development banks, utilities, private companies, local finance companies and public officials from respective energy departments. Training materials, which were based on a successful Palau Development Bank model, focused on the design of credit lines by national development banks for renewable energy consumers in their home applications.
