UNFCCC side-event Renewable Energy Technologies: Technology Trends, Patents and Policy Implications

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held a joint side-event during sessions for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany. The discussion explored key trends in renewable energy technologies based on analysis of patent literature and considered the implications for policy making.

RENA presented findings related to patents from its forthcoming report, Ocean Energy: Technology Readiness, Patents, Market Status and Outlook. IRENA’s presentation is available here

WIPO followed this by presenting its new report,Renewable Energy Technology: Evolution and Policy Implications – Evidence from Patent Literature.

The session attracted more than 50 participants, including climate-change negotiators, providing the opportunity for representatives from the UNFCCC Technology Executive Committee, the UNFCCC Climate Technology Centre and Network, and industry to consider the policy implications of the findings on the role of patents for a sustainable energy transition.
