Africa Clean Energy Corridor

At IRENA’s third Assembly on 13 January, Director-General Adnan Z. Amin announced a new initiative to develop an Africa Clean Energy Corridor.  Working with partners, IRENA will encourage accelerated expansion of renewable power options on the power grids of Eastern and Southern Africa.

IRENA will work with partners to draft an action agenda of steps to be taken over the next 5, 10 and 20 years to build and support the Clean Energy Corridor.  The focus will be on helping electricity generators, transmission companies, power pools and planning agencies achieve a greater share of renewable generation on their grids.  IRENA will help countries conduct assessments of wind, solar and other renewable energy resources, and to model the economic benefits of incorporating more renewable generating capacity into their expansion plans for power generation.

In dialogue with power pools, IRENA will explore priorities for enhancing regional transmission links to accommodate a greater share of renewables in long-run master plans, as well as help countries and regions strengthen their capacities to plan, build and operate grids with a greater share of renewables.
