Smartening renewable energy supply on islands – addressing technical, economic and systemic challenges

Despite the fact that there is a high economic potential for renewable energy on islands due to high costs of fossil energy sources we still lack sufficient progress in deploying relevant renewable energy systems. With innovative systemic and technical solutions for isolated (renewable) energy supply on islands gaining ground, the debate is now gaining political momentum. In order to assess the prospective opportunities, the session will provide concrete examples of renewable energy installations and discuss the challenges, approaches, and technical solutions for renewable energy supply on islands. Furthermore, lessons learnt from implementing renewable energy based energy supply networks will be elaborated.
