IRENA/SANEDI workshop: Renewable energy planning for the Southern African Power Pool
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), along with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) held a workshop on energy planning to develop power pool systems for the region. The workshop took place at SANEDI on 19-20 November, with IRENA demonstrating practical applications of the System Planning Test (SPLAT) model – known until recently as the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) model – for the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Presentations included reports and data on SPLAT application, with results for a non-hydro scenario and various other renewable energy scenarios. The countries targeted in the discussion were: Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
