About
The Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) is an international alliance led by African countries with a high ambition on renewables. It aims to accelerate the implementation of their energy transitions and promote green industrialisation. The initiative focuses on renewables-based economic growth, industrial development, job creation, and improved lives and livelihoods. APRA leverages political leadership to drive action, innovation, and new models of cooperation.
APRA was launched at COP 28 in Dubai on 02 December 2023. The initiative is rooted in the Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change and Call for Action, which targets at least 300 GW of renewable energy by 2030. APRA countries aim to transition away from fossil fuels, triple renewables, and double efficiency by 2030. With an initial renewable capacity of 9.5 GW in 2023, APRA aims to reach 37 GW by 2030, adding approximately 4 GW annually.
Mission & Vision
APRA's primary objectives include mobilising finance, providing technical assistance and capacity building, and engaging the private sector to support renewable energy transitions. The partnership offers fast, tailored, and innovative models of cooperation that are country-driven and context-aligned, reflecting specific circumstances, priorities, aspirations, and needs. It aims to demonstrate the impact of accelerated renewables-based transitions, prioritising short to medium-term actions aligned with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Organisational Structure
APRA consists of 7 African countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe, with support from international partners such as Denmark, Germany, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates and IRENA fulfilling the secretariat role. The partnership is managed through a collaborative framework that involves political leadership, peer-to-peer exchanges, and mobilisation of actions and commitments from both public and private entities.
Participation
APRA invites participation from various stakeholders, including public and private entities, to contribute to its mission of accelerating renewable energy transitions in Africa.
